Andrew Mac at the Caird Hall

Event Name:
Andrew Mac at the Caird Hall
Details:

The wide tonal and dynamic range of its fifty speaking stops has led to it being acclaimed as one of the world's outstanding concert hall organs. It fits perfectly with the scale of the hall itself, designed by the city architect James Thomson and renowned for its marvellous acoustics. The original builders carried out a sensitive restoration in 1991–2. The pitch was sharpened at this point to allow the organ to be used with visiting orchestras and bands. Unlike many other contemporary organs, the specification had not been altered in later life, so the instrument retains all of its original sound and character.

Phantom of the Opera comes to Dundee

General
Title:
Phantom of the Opera comes to Dundee
Details:

FOCHO is delighted to offer Dundonians the chance to step back in time with a silent film screening in the Caird Hall on Friday 26 November.

We'll be screening the 1925 film of The Phantom of the Opera with a live improvised organ accompaniment by Nigel Ogden, star of BBC Radio 2's The Organist Entertains. Acknowledged as one of the great cinematic masterpieces, The Phantom of the Opera weaves passion, drama and horror in the story of the mysterious masked Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, in his deranged efforts to force out the leading singer and make the woman he loves a star.

Providing the live musical accompaniment on the magnificent organ in the hall is Nigel Ogden, one of the finest exponents of the art of silent film accompaniment. A versatile player, he is equally at home playing a cathedral organ or the mighty Wurlitzer at Blackpool Tower, where he first fell in love with the instrument.

The Caird Hall was built with a projection room but has rarely been used for film screenings. This is an evening not to be missed!

Tickets are available from Dundee City Box Office at £10 (Friends £8). Schoolchildren free if accompanied by an adult.
